The first Investiture of the Victoria Cross was held in Hyde Park, London, on Friday, 26
th June, 1857.
The ranks stated below are the ranks held on the date the recipient was recommended for the Victoria Cross, which differs for those recipients who were promoted following the date of their heroic action, and/or promoted following the date of their recommendation prior to the Investiture. For example:-
- Danny was a Bombardier during the final assault on the Redan on 8th September, 1855, the date of his heroic action.
- He was promoted to Serjeant on 21st April, 1856.
- Serjeant Daniel Cambridge was recommended for the Victoria Cross on 19th December, 1856.
- He was promoted to Master Gunner on 18th April, 1857.
- Serjeant Daniel Cambridge was Gazetted the Victoria Cross on 23rd June, 1857, Issue 22014, Page 3.
- Therefore, on 26th June, 1857, Master Gunner Daniel Cambridge received from The Queen his Victoria Cross correctly engraved to Sjt. Daniel Cambridge, which he won when he was a Bombardier.
